Double glazing Wakefield | High Quality Windows | Energy Efficient

From our offices in Wakefield and across the United Kingdom we service a wide and varied portfolio of clients.  In particular we are experts in respect of energy efficient windows.

Energy Efficient Windows

In recent years, due to climate change, our society is increasingly aware of environmental issues and the responsibilities we have to help conserve natural resources.

The right PVC windows for your home you can significantly reduce your carbon emissions and save household bills

Recent developments in industry mean double glazed windows can be rated the same way as white goods, such as fridges.

The BFRC ("British Fenestration Rating Council") operates a grading system where windows are rated "A" to "G" based on the thermal effectiveness of the window.

"A" represents the most energy efficient
"C" is required for "Energy Saving Recommended" certification.
"G" represents the least energy efficient

This system takes into account heat escaping through the glass and the frame and allows consumers to facilitate comparisons between competing window products.

The window rating system looks at three aspects of performance

(a)the U value, or heat loss
(b)the G value, or solar gain
(c)the L value, or air leakage

These ratings apply to a complete window i.e. the frames and glass in its entirety, the glass itself plays a major part in the rating that a particular window can secure.

Since mid-2007 the Government made it mandatory for house sellers to have a “Home Information Pack” (HIPs).  This pack includes an “Energy Rating Certificate” (ERCs) which tells the buyer how efficiently the property utilises and reserves energy and the environmental impact of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

Installation of most double glazed windows will help improve the overall performance of your home which will not only reduce your heating bills but it could improve the value of your property and speed up any future sale to a prospective customer.

Other benefits of installing certain double glazed windows:-

  • reduction in condensation (up to 70%) virtually eliminating the potential breeding ground for many bacteria, mould and mites potentially harmful to people who have breathing ailments such as Asthma.
  • reduction in noise transmission (up to 2dB)

Overall, energy  benefits from efficient windows include:-

  • reduction in domestic heat loss
  • reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions
  • reduction in heating bills
  • reduction in propensity for condensation
  • reduction in the amount of noise transmitted into your home, whilst allowing sunlight to be fully admitted.
  • reduction in emissivity – "low-e", for short.  This represents thin metal coatings applied to a plastic film between the panes of glass, or applied, retrospectively, to the external surfaces. Low emissivity coatings are virtually invisible to the human eye from the inside looking out, but appear slightly mirrored from the outside looking in. They are "spectrally selective" – i.e. they allow short wave radiation from the Sun to penetrate your home, but do not allow long wave heat radiation to escape in the other direction.  This attribute can make them up to forty percent more efficient than conventional double glazed windows as a result.

It is important to note that frames conduct heat, and are therefore critical in determining the overall energy efficiency. UPVC window frames of composite wood and fibreglass frames are typically more energy efficient than frames made from aluminium, or other metals, which can be very poor thermal insulators.  Vinyl and wood are, however, subject to contraction and expansion with ambient temperature.
